Leave of absence
The Government introduced legislation in September 2013, no longer permitting us to authorise any term time holidays (Statutory Instruments 2013 No 756: The Education (Pupil Registration)(England)(Amendment) Regulations 2013.
Applications for leave of absence may be considered but only in exceptional circumstances such as bereavement or medical conditions necessitating travel etc. Cheaper holidays are not considered as an exceptional circumstance.
If you do choose to take your child out of school during term time for a holiday the absence will be unauthorised and a penalty notice will be applied for. The penalty for each parent is £60 for each child if paid within 21 days of the notice, rising to £120 if paid after 21 days but within 28 days of the receipt of the notice. If the penalty is not paid in full by the end of the 28 day period Essex Education Welfare Service may prosecute for the offence of irregular school attendance (Education Act 444(1)).
Please see our Attendance Policy for further information regarding pupil absence.
